A Social Issue: The Never-Ending Femicide in Turkey
Femicide in Turkey is, unfortunately, a problem that continues to grow day by day. In the first nine months of 2024, 295 women were killed by men. These tragic events are not just individual tragedies but also reveal a deep social wound.
Femicide is often committed by the men closest to the victims. Husbands, fathers, boyfriends, or ex-partners end these women's lives. These murders even occur in their homes, where women should feel the safest. Women, who are now afraid to even walk in the streets, struggle to hold on to life.
According to the data from the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, suspicious female deaths have increased by 82% in the last seven years. This increase shows how inadequate society is in combating violence against women. Deficiencies in fair trials and impunity policies pose a significant barrier to preventing these murders.
Young women like İkbal Uzuner and Ayşenur Halil lost their lives in the prime of their youth, but these tragedies seem neither to be the first nor the last. Urgent steps need to be taken to stop femicide. As a society, we must ensure the safety of women and work harder to prevent such tragedies. We must raise our male children with the awareness to respect and love women.
